Readiness

Change starts with knowing where you are right now. This worksheet helps you look clearly at one habit and gauge your readiness to change it — no pressure, just a snapshot in time.

1. Choose a habit

Think about a habit you may wish to change, or think you should change — for example, stopping smoking or eating late at night.

2. Describe it in detail

What is it? When does it happen? Where? How long have you done it? How often?

3. Assess your readiness

Have someone ask you these four questions. Mark each answer yes or no. If it isn’t clearly a yes (for instance, “yes, but…”), mark it no.

01Do you see this behaviour as a problem?
02Does this behaviour bother you?
03Are you ready to change this behaviour?
04Are you ready to start changing now?

4. Score it with the “traffic light”

Red light — four No’s. Let’s take change off the table for now — but, if you’re willing, we can gently explore the reasons behind the no.

Yellow light — a mix of answers. This is the most common state of readiness. It’s time to proceed with caution and explore the ambivalence.

Green light — all Yes’s. It’s time to focus on behaviour change — there are techniques to learn and build confidence in. Let’s get to business.
